Just who were the nephilim? This is a passage of scripture that has been taught differently from many pulpits. A very popular teaching is that the nephilim are the offspring between fallen angels and human women. Could the nephilim be the offspring that stems from fallen angels mating with humans?
Well let’s first look at scripture and scripture alone to navigate this topic. The word “naphiyl” first appears in Genesis chapter six where we see events unfolding just prior to the flood. This word is simply translated into the English word “Giants”. The first six verses of this chapter are where the confusion begins amongst the different beliefs. Mind you, the confusion is not in the scripture, but rather the confusion comes from the different readers who attempt to read this passage and do not read the passage in its entire context of the bible itself.
GENESIS 6:1-6 KJV 1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. 5And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
Lets first look at the single line that is used to imply “Fallen Angels” In Genesis 6:2 we see the phrase “Sons of God” This line alone is what is being considered by some to mean “Fallen Angels”. Why? It’s mainly because of the book of Job. In Job 1:6 the same phrase “Sons of God” is used and here it is referring to angels. But does this mean that we can assume that the phrase “Sons of God “ in Genesis 6 is also referring to angels? Well to believe that it does goes against Matthew 22:30.
MATTHEW 22:30 KJV “For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven”.
What does this mean? Well lets look at Genesis 6 in light of Matthew 22:30. Could the “Sons of God” be fallen Angels? Well first of all it makes no sense to call a fallen angel a “Son” of God. More importantly it goes against scripture to believe that this passage could be talking about any angel whether they are fallen or not. Why? Well first of all this passage does not just imply mating with women, but it downright says that they made them their “WIVES” Angels do not marry and are not given in marriage.
We need to be realistic and ask ourselves…”Is it possible for an angel to mate and breed with a human” After reading my bible, I have to say no. Why? Humans are the only creation made in Gods image. The angels are not made in Gods image. What does this mean? Humans are the only trinal creation from the Hand of God. We alone have a spirit, soul and body. Angels do not have bodies. They can take on the “APPEARANCE” of a human, but they still have no body. God is a God of order. God clearly has shown us in his creation, that he creates things to bring forth after their own kind. Fish don’t cross breed with birds. Angels don’t crossbreed with humans.
Jesus in Matthew 5:9 refers to us as children of God. Paul in Romans 8:14, 8:19 and Galatians 3:26 refers to the sons and or children of God as humans.
So if we established who the nephilim are not, then who were the nephilim? The sons of God were men who took wives from the daughters of men. The nephilim by Hebrew definition were really only large men. Their very name actually implies that they were tyrants and bullies and not half-breed offspring between Fallen angels and mankind.
There are those who will still be passionate and claim that the earth was destroyed in part because the nephilim were created. This is a foolish belief as God is clear that it was man and man alone that had caused God to bring destruction to the earth by way of the flood. To believe that the flood was also meant to destroy the nephilim because they were the offspring from fallen angels mating with women means you have to explain why there were eventually nephilim after to flood as well (Numbers 13:33).
I know some teach that the nephilim were aliens from another world, but I thought it best not to dwell on absurdities.
God bless you
